A New Era of the Machining World

The common conception of the machining world is that it is propelled by a bunch of Elks Club gearheads, but when you go to IMTS, you see the diversity and depth that makes this world constantly fascinating.

One thing I have noticed during this show is that women are becoming increasingly visible. A few years ago, the only women you would see were the models and greeters in the booths and an occasional wife keeping her husband company. Today women own companies and buy machines. They hold responsible positions in engineering and design. They are players in this show, not ornaments.

I have also seen more Hispanic names who are not from Mexican or Latin American firms—a sign of increasing influence of Hispanic people in American machining.

On the flipside, virtually the only African Americans to be seen are on the McCormick Place work staff. Where are the black people in American manufacturing? –a rhetorical question for the people who are in it.

Continuing on the diversity theme, yesterday a financial advisor, a shrink and a chaired professor stopped by the Today’s Machine World booth to chat.

Dana Barfield counsels business owners on transition issues. Much of his clientele is in the manufacturing world, so he was looking to stay current with the moods and trends.

Professor Jay Lee holds the Alter Engineering Chair at the University of Cincinnati. He is working on machines that can diagnose and repair their malfunctions without human intervention.

I have also talked to several grad students and professors at IMTS who are doing interesting work at Purdue, Florida and Kentucky.
Manufacturing is alive and well right now if you are good at what you do and willing to invest in machinery and brains.
